Overview

This Bachmann Replacement Gear HO is a precision‑made 3D printed reduction gear designed for Bachmann HO scale locomotives that use the classic pancake motor. This gear replaces the original intermediate reduction gear located between the wheel and the gearbox — a known failure point on many older Bachmann models.

Gear Specifications

Reduction gear with two sets of teeth:
- 8‑tooth pinion section
- 18‑tooth main gear section
Direct replacement for the factory wheel‑to‑gearbox intermediate gear
Designed specifically for Bachmann’s pancake‑motor drive system
Precision 3D printed for accuracy and durability

This dual‑tooth design is essential for proper gear reduction and smooth power transfer from the pancake motor to the drive wheels.

Why This Gear Fails (and Why This One Fixes It)

Bachmann’s original molded gears are prone to splitting, especially on pancake‑motor locomotives. When the gear cracks:

The locomotive jerks or hesitates
Wheels may spin without moving the engine
Clicking or grinding noises appear
The drivetrain may bind or lock up entirely

This replacement gear eliminates those issues with a stronger, dimensionally stable upgrade.

Installation Notes (Important)

To ensure proper installation and avoid damage:

• Place the gear on a flat surface and press the axle straight down into it. The fit is intentionally tight for correct operation. If the axle is inserted at an angle or pressure is uneven, the gear may crack.

• Tight tolerances are required for smooth running. Due to the precision needed and the nature of current manufacturing techniques, minor customer adjustments may be required to achieve optimal performance. This is normal for small 3D‑printed drivetrain components.

Precision 3D Printed for Reliability

Each gear is printed using engineering‑grade resin selected for:

Strength and crack resistance
Accurate tooth geometry
Smooth, quiet operation
Long‑term durability

Every part is inspected for clean tooth profiles and consistent fit before shipping.

Compatibility

Fits Bachmann HO scale locomotives equipped with the pancake motor and using the 8/18‑tooth intermediate reduction gear. If you’re unsure about your model, I can confirm compatibility quickly.

Ideal For

Restoring vintage Bachmann HO locomotives
Fixing split or slipping reduction gears
Improving drivetrain reliability
Modelers who prefer repairing over replacing

Quality Guarantee

All parts are printed, cleaned, and inspected in‑house at Penguin 3D Workshop. If a gear doesn’t fit or perform as expected, I’ll make it right.
